Lasik LASER TECHNIQUE FOR REMOVAL OF GLASSES
THE ULTIMATE IN REFRACTIVE SURGERY

THE EYE AS IT WORKS FOR YOU
The variables that work perfectly together to give you normal vision without requiring glasses or contact lenses are :
1. The curvature of the cornea (surface).
2. The shape of the lens.
3. The length of the eyeball.

If these are perfectly adjusted, as they should be, you have good vision. If you wear glasses or contact lenses you have either of the following refractive errors :

1. Myopia (near-sighted) :
This means that either of the two may apply: the surface of the cornea may be overly curved OR the length of the eyeball maybe too much.

2. Hyperopia (far-sighted) :
This means that either the surface of your cornea is not curved enough OR the eyeball is too short.

3. Astigmatism :
This means that the surface of your cornea is non-spherical thus it does not focus objects equally on the retina.

LASIK
LASIK is the acronym which stands for Laser Assisted in- Situ Keratomileusis. It is also referred to as Laser Intrastromal Keratomileusis. It has become the most preferred procedure for the treatment of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. he results are dramatic and the visual recovery is rapid which is why patients embracing this procedure the world over. Improved vision without corrective glasses is attained immediately after the procedure and visual stability takes place within a few weeks in most of the cases.

HOW IT IS DONE
It involves a microkeratome which creates a layer in the top of the cornea and then the middle layers of the cornea are reshaped with the Excimer Laser. After the light energy of the Excimer ablates the cornea (creating the desired shape of the cornea precisely), the top layer flap is then replaced back. This attaches back to the cornea thus protecting the treated area like a bandage and minimizes patient discomfort.

THE PROCEDURES AVAILABLE
The corrective procedures offered in the past like Radial Keratectomy (RK) or Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK) are no longer preferred due to their unpredictability and the amount of discomfort caused to the patient. Photo Refractive Keratectomy (PRK) is preferred by few surgeons for cases with very low power.

RESULTS
Remember to expect a realistic result. The aim of LASIK is to reduce you dependence on corrective lenses. Not all people end as 6/6! It is not possible to guarantee, a total  elimination of glasses power in every case. The near vision (presbyopic) glasses requirement after the age 40, cannot be corrected fully.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
Any person above the age of 19 years with a history of stable eye power, of over one year duration, with healthy corneas is a suitable candidate for the LASIK procedure.Certain people with some medical conditions are not suitable for the procedure. This will be discussed with you during the pre-procedure evaluation.

ELIGIBILITY
You are eligible for an evaluation at our Eye Care Centres, where your eligibility will be assessed after a detailed eye check-up. This includes your analysis, on the Corneal Topography System. You expectations will be discussed and analyzed by an experienced ophthalmologist, so that your decisions are based upon facts, and a realistic approach.
